PANDAS & PANS in the Playroom:
How to Become PANS/PANDAS Literate in an Intake and
​Throughout the Play Therapy Process

PANDAS, Lyme Disease and PANS are becoming talked about more and more. Sometimes children in the playroom present with OCD type symptoms, others hallucinate while others still may experience separation anxiety, school refusal or other confusing symptoms. Learn how encephalitis (inflammation in the brain), detox, diet and infection load can impact a child's emotional and mental health as well as impact his/her nervous system. Children with these infections can appear psychotic, shows signs of trauma or even appear suicidal. In this training, the presenter will walk through a play therapy intake process and discuss symptoms parallel to PANS/PANDAS so that participants will be able to identify specific symptoms to warrant a referral to a medical doctor for proper diagnosis.Participants will be able to identify playful strategies to use in the playroom when a child is referred who is already diagnosed with PANS/PANDAS.

​Learning Objectives. Participants will be able to:

Describe Infections and environmental impacts that can cause mental health symptoms in a play therapy client

Describe the brain and body’s response to encephalitis (brain inflammation)

Identity questions to ask in a play therapy intake to tease out potential PANDAS/PANS

Identify why cognitive strategies might not work right away in a play therapy client with PANDAS/PANS

Describe why a bottom (of the brain) up strategy for working with children with PANDAS/PANS can be helpful

Describe ways to use art, sand tray and other play therapy tools with a child who has PANDAS/PANS

Describe ways to help a child calm his/her nervous system

Identify situations in which a child may be too sick for therapy. When to pause play therapy.
​

​3 Play Therapy Contact CE:  8:45 am to 12pm Friday, January 22, 2021 EST. (​Virtual Real-Time Training) 
$99 Regular Fee and $55 Student Rate​
ZOOM link will be provided. Cameras must be on. Full participation and attendance required for APT contact CEs
Participants MUST have paper and pencils/markers, etc for writing and art prompts

About the presenter:
Gabrielle Anderson, LMFT, RPT-S is the owner of the Family Therapy Center of Northern Virginia, llc and the Willow's Crown Meditation Studio and Training Facility, llc in Lansdowne, Virginia. There she sees children as young as three, teens and couples. Gabrielle loves teaching and sharing knowledge of Play Therapy. Her areas of expertise lie in trauma, chronic illness, anxiety and relationships.
