The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP)

Safely Rewire Your Nervous System Through Algorithmically Filtered Music

Picture
  • Often times stress and anxiety make us feel AMPED and out of control (panic attacks, angry outbursts, racing thoughts).  Other times we shrink, shut down and shut out (isolating from others, not responding to friends, procrastinating with deadlines)

Sometimes Traditional Therapy is NOT Enough
With unmanaged stress, anxiety and trauma, relationships suffer, school/work performance drops and life feels EXHAUSTING.

Finding ways to CALM the
Nervous System and feel SAFE in the body is key... and WE CAN HELP.

The SSP is a gentle listening program that exercises the middle ear and stimulates cranial nerves through scientifically filtered music. This helps teach your nervous system to settle and feel safe. Imagine feeling more balanced & calm in your body!

Those with sensory overload, panic attacks, residual trauma, anxiety etc have reported feeling more relief after participating in the sessions.

A Tiered Approach to the SSP Program
Some clients are able to be introduced to the SSP and can quickly implement the sessions independently at home. Others need the supportive and watchful eye of a therapist to help them stay calm and alert during sessions.

Variables to Client Need May Include:
  • How healthy the vagus nerve appears to be (trauma, chronic illness, chronic stress impact the nervous system),
  • How in touch the client (or parent of client) is with emotion and physical sensations in the body
  • How quickly a client goes into fight/flight or shut down mode
  • How safe the client feels in their body and world at large
  • What type of support system is in the home

Every client comes into the SSP space with different needs and a varied background; therefore a tiered approach to the program is available based on need.

FAQ
Q: How do I know if I am a good candidate for the SSP?

A:
1. Must be seizure free before participating

2. Have a desire to feel more calm, regulated and safe in the body.

3. Be able to commit to DAILY  15 (sometimes up to 30) minute listening sessions (from home/office) for 3-8 weeks depending on how slow your (or your child’s) nervous system needs to go

4. Be able to tolerate wearing over the ear headphones

5. Have access to over the ear headphones that do NOT cancel sound

Q: What are common side effects of the SSP?
A: The clinician, parent or adult self watches for ANY internal shifts/changes during the listening session. When these occur, the participant pauses the session, takes a deep breath and waits for the sensations to dissipate. When the symptoms disappear, the session is re-started. If symptoms arise a second time (or 3rd if minor), the session is stopped completely and a new session begins the next day. Many sessions are completely symptom free and some participants can stretch their session from 15 minutes to 30 minutes.
Common in session symptoms include: Tension somewhere in the body, yawns, burps, spontaneous giggles, emotion, dizziness etc. These symptoms suggest potential shifts in the nervous system. Although shifts are what we want, these shifts need to be monitored and controlled. LESS IS MORE when working to heal the nervous system. This is why the sessions are stopped and controlled.

Q: When will I see results?
A: Some see results after the first session, while others see results farther into the program. Clients will take pre-tests and post-tests to help gauge progress. Changes in the nervous system are still occurring a month after completing the SSP. Post tests are scheduled a month after completing the program to help monitor success. Some report dramatic changes while others are more subtle.

Q: How often can the SSP be repeated?
A: If needed, the SSP may be completed again in 6 months using the same method as before.

Q: Does insurance cover the SSP? What about Health Savings and Flex accounts?
A: If the SSP is utilized DURING a therapy session, the session itself can be coded for therapy. The SSP in this scenario is seen as a tool being used during session. Sessions that only include SSP administration can not be coded for insurance reimbursement. Health Savings account and Flexible Spending account cards can be used to help cover the expenses of the SSP program.
